Cade Smith saves the day

Cade Smith entered the 8th inning last night after had loaded the bases with nobody out and the Guardians up 3-0 in Detroit.

He then struck out the next three batters.

This is the second time in franchise history a pitcher has entered the game with the bases loaded and struck out the next three batters he faced.

The first was in 2021. James Karichack had loaded the bases for Wittgren, who came in and struck out the side. Unfortunately, Karinchack had already given up the go-ahead runs and the Tribe lost that one.

A handful of other others have struck out the side with the bases loaded to prevent a run from scoring, but only after loading the bases themselves.

Perhaps the most interesting case of that was in September of 1969.

Law, a rookie reliever, loaded the bases in the 6th inning against the Yankees before recording three straight strikeouts. Law would pitch the 7th inning also, giving up two runs. And then his career was over.

Tim Herrin Walks Everyone

Tim Herrin entered Friday’s game in the 6th inning with a runner on first and promptly walked all three batters he faced.

It was the 15th time in franchise history a Cleveland pitcher faced at least three batters and walked each one.

The most recent occurrences prior to Herrin:

This is also the first time its happened to Cleveland twice in the same year (Herrin, Karinchak).

Pete Alonso Grand Slam

James Karinchack entered last night’s game in the seventh inning with a 7-3 lead, but the bases were loaded and Pete Alonso at the plate. Karinchack promptly surrendered a game-tying grand slam.

It was the seventh time in franchise history Cleveland allowed a game-tying grand slam in the seventh inning or later. The others:

The Tingley grand slam off Mesa stands out as the most shocking on the list. Tingley was a journeyman backup catcher who hit 10 career home runs, the first of which came a member of the Indians in 1988.
