6 Pitchers in a Shutout

Six Guardians pitchers combined for a shutout of the Rockies on Wednesday: , , , , and .

It was the seventh time in franchise history at least six pitchers combined on a shutout and the fifth time in a nine-inning game.

Here’s the list of the others, which includes the MLB-record nine pitchers used in a 10-inning shutout against the Tigers in 2016 which was matched for the first time on Wednesday by the Royals.

Cade Smith saves the day

Cade Smith entered the 8th inning last night after had loaded the bases with nobody out and the Guardians up 3-0 in Detroit.

He then struck out the next three batters.

This is the second time in franchise history a pitcher has entered the game with the bases loaded and struck out the next three batters he faced.

The first was in 2021. James Karichack had loaded the bases for Wittgren, who came in and struck out the side. Unfortunately, Karinchack had already given up the go-ahead runs and the Tribe lost that one.

A handful of other others have struck out the side with the bases loaded to prevent a run from scoring, but only after loading the bases themselves.

Perhaps the most interesting case of that was in September of 1969.

Law, a rookie reliever, loaded the bases in the 6th inning against the Yankees before recording three straight strikeouts. Law would pitch the 7th inning also, giving up two runs. And then his career was over.

Tim Herrin Walks Everyone

Tim Herrin entered Friday’s game in the 6th inning with a runner on first and promptly walked all three batters he faced.

It was the 15th time in franchise history a Cleveland pitcher faced at least three batters and walked each one.

The most recent occurrences prior to Herrin:

This is also the first time its happened to Cleveland twice in the same year (Herrin, Karinchak).

Michael Kelly Perfect in Debut

Michael Kelly made his season debut on Saturday against the Rangers with a three-up, three-down inning with two strikeouts. It was just the fifth career game for Kelly, a 30-year-old rookie, who made his MLB debut last year for the Phillies.

Dating back to 1990, Kelly is just the 14th pitcher to post the following stats in his Cleveland debut:

  • At least three batters faced
  • No baserunners allowed
  • 2 or more strikeouts
