HBP and BB with Bases Loaded

In the fourth inning on Saturday night, loaded the bases against the Padres, then walked Luis Arraez and two batters later hit Jake Cronenworth.

It was just the ninth time in the last 100 years a Cleveland pitcher walked a batter and hit a batter with the bases loaded.

Everyone on the list except Williams and Feller did it to consecutive batters.

Eckersley’s meltdown was a historically embarrassing moment for the team. In the bottom of the 9th, with the Indians leading 2-1 at Chicago, rookie manager called up Eck – a rookie reliever making just his ninth career appearance. Eck promptly hit the first batter, tying the game, then issued a walk-off-walk to the next batter.

Torey Lovullo and David Bell

Diamondbacks manager selected Reds manager as the “honorary manager” to join him at the All-Star Game in Texas.

Bell and Lovullo know each other originally from their time together in Cleveland. In 1995, they were teammates in Buffalo, Cleveland’s Triple-A affiliate. In 1998, they were teammates again in Cleveland.

In Lovullo’s first appearance with Cleveland in ’98, Bell entered the game as his defensive replacement in the late innings.

Lovullo then spent eight years as a manager in Cleveland’s farm system, including four years at Triple-A.

Clase’s 2nd ASG Save

Emmanuel Clase picked up the save in the All-Star Game for the second time in his career. Since the save became an official stat in 1969, the only pitchers to record multiple saves are now in the Hall of Fame:

Prior to the save existing as a defined stat, Cleveland’s was the only pitcher to record multiple saves, in 1935 and 1937. Harder tossed three innings in each of his saves, though one was still a traditional save opportunity as the AL won 4-1.

David Fry ASG RBI

David Fry tied the All-Star Game up 3-3 with an RBI single in the third inning off Logan Webb. It was Cleveland’s first tying or go-ahead RBI in the All-Star game in over 20 years.

Travis Bazzana Selected First Overall

The Guardians selected Oregon State’s with the first overall selection in this year’s MLB draft.

Bazzana was born in Australia and, if he makes it to the majors with Cleveland, will be just the second Australian-born player in team history.

, a lefty pitcher, appeared in 15 games for the Tribe during the 2000 season.

Steven Kwan Batting Leadoff

Steven Kwan will be the leadoff hitter for the American League in this year’s All-Star Game. He’s the sixth different Cleveland hitter to bat leadoff in the game.

Kwan will face Pirates rookie Paul Skenes in the first inning. The last time a rookie started the All-Star Game was in 1995, when Hideo Nomo struck out Kenny Lofton to start the game. was the number-two hitter that year and followed up with a hit.

Clase’s Historic First Half

Emmanuel Clase enters the All-Star break with 29 saves and a 0.81 ERA. He’s just the ninth pitcher in to record at least 25 saves with an ERA under 1.00 in the first half.

Everyone on the list made the All-Star team except Knickerbocker, who was left off in favor of Hall of Famer Joe Cronin, the only shortstop selected to the game that year. Cronin was batting .283 with a .354 OBP.
