Noel’s Pinch-Hit HR

‘s belted Cleveland’s fourth pinch-hit go-ahead home run of the season on Saturday afternoon, setting a team record. , and hit the first three.

The previous record of three was set in 1967 by (twice) and .

Noel is also just the sixth rookie in team history with a pinch-hit, go-ahead home run. The others:

Hardy, Davis and Wilson’s were their first career home runs. Hardy’s was a walk-off against Chicago’s 7-time All-Star pitcher Billy Pierce.

Davis’ home run was also a walk-off and the only home run of his career,

Bo Naylor walk-off

Bo Naylor collected a walk-off RBI on a pinch-hit sacrifice fly last night against the White Sox. It was just the 5th pinch-hit walk-off sac fly for Cleveland over the last 100 years.

The others:

Smith’s walk-off in 1976 gave the Indians a 1-0 victory and secured a 10-inning shutout for . Eck and had taken dueling shutouts into extra innings.

Catchers with Double and Triple

Bo Naylor collected a double and a triple last night at Baltimore. His triple was the first by a Cleveland catcher since in July 2019 at Kansas City.

Collecting a couple and a triple is even more rare for a catcher, as its happened just four time since 1980:

5 hits, 7 RBI from Bottom Third

Last night against the Orioles, , and combined for 7 hits and 5 RBI while occupying the 7-8-9 spots in the order. It was the first time the bottom third of the order collected at least 7 hits and 5 RBI since 2019.

Most recent 7-8-9 hitters with 7+ hits and 5+ RBI:

Naylors Homer in Same Game

Josh Naylor and Bo Naylor each homered off Rangers pitcher Jon Gray in the third inning last night. A few fun notes on the accomplishment:

  • 13th pair of brothers to homer in the same game as teammates
  • First pair of brothers to homer in same game for Cleveland
  • 5th pair of brothers to homer in the same inning as teammates

The most recent occurrences were B.J. and Justin Upton in 2013 and 2014 for the Braves. The Uptons homered in the same game six times and the same inning twice.

Cleveland has been involved in a same-game homer for brothers as opponents. In June 1972, Graig Nettles homered for Cleveland, while Jim Nettles homered for the Twins. And in July 1933, Wes Ferrell homered for Cleveland, while Rick Ferrell homered for the Red Sox (off of Wes) in the top and bottom half of the fourth inning.

Bo Naylor 3-Hit Game

Bo Naylor collected three against the Royals in his 20th career game.

Dating back to 1990, he’s the 11th Cleveland rookie with multiple three-hit games through 20 career games, joining:

Strikeouts vs Position Players

In his final at bat last night, Bo Naylor struck out against Diamondbacks infielder Josh Rojas.

He’s the 14th Cleveland hitter to strike out against a position player over the last 50 seasons joining:

Martinez’s inclusion gets an asterisk because it was an add situation.

With the Indians leading the A’s 10-2 in the bottom of the 8th, Martinez fouled off a pitch against A’s pitcher Kelly Downs, who then began shouting at Martinez because he swung “too hard.”

Martinez shouted back and both players were ejected with the count at 2-2.

A’s manager Tony La Russa brought third baseman Kevin Seitzer in to pitch, and called upon , who took the only pitch he saw for a strike, resulting in a strikeout.

Some odd rules apply to this situation, which officially result in Seitzer getting credit for a strikeout of Martinez, even though they never actually faced each other.

It’s also worth mentioning Naylor’s strikeout occurred before collecting his first career hit. While I can’t confirm this, it’s reasonable to guess he may be the first player in MLB history to strike out against a position player before recording a hit.

Brothers in the Lineup

Bo Naylor and Josh Naylor were each in the Guardians lineup last night for the first time.

They’re the fourth pair of brothers to appear in the same game for Cleveland joining:

Pitchers Gaylord and Jim Perry were also on the Indians during the 1974 and 1975 seasons, but never appeared in the same game.

Dave and Vean Gregg were also briefly teammates in 1913, though Dave appeared in just one game.
