Four Hits from Nine-Hole

In Sunday’s loss to the Twins, went 4-4 with two run scored while batting ninth.

It was just the ninth time someone collected four hits from the nine-hole at home since Jacobs Field opened in 1994.

The others:

Rocchio and Asdrubal were the only ones to do so in a losing effort.

The last to so home or away was in Kansas City in 2019.

Four Hits and a Grand Slam

In Wednesday’s blowout win over the Royals, collected four hits and capped off his day with an 8th inning grand slam.

He’s the 15th player in franchise history with four hits and a grand slam in a game, and the first since 2010

Here’s the list

Martinez is the first to also add a stolen base to his stat line.

George Valera’s first postseason home run

In the first inning of Game 2 of the ALWC, gave the Guardians a 1-0 with his first career postseason home run.

Valera, who made his major league debut in September, had just two career home runs prior to his first playoff homer.

That ties pitcher (who homered in the 1920 World Series) for the team record for fewest homers before hitting a home run in the playoffs.

The next fewest belong to (three), (five) and (five).

Career Cycyle

On Wednesday against Arizona, hit his first career triple, giving him a career cycle in his 16th game.

Here’s just the 9th player to collect the career cycle through 16 games or less with Cleveland since 1990, joining:

The fastest to do so in that span was Ward, who needed just eight games in 1990.

The all-time franchise record is five games, shared by (1989) and Woodling (1943)

HR vs. Defending Champs

On Wednesday, hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the 8th inning of the Guardians 7-4 win over the Dodgers, the team’s first go-ahead home run in the 8th inning or later against the defending champs since 2019.

Here are the rest of the go-ahead HR in 8th or later vs defending World Series champs since 2000:

Strikeouts vs Position Players

In his final at bat last night, Bo Naylor struck out against Diamondbacks infielder Josh Rojas.

He’s the 14th Cleveland hitter to strike out against a position player over the last 50 seasons joining:

Martinez’s inclusion gets an asterisk because it was an add situation.

With the Indians leading the A’s 10-2 in the bottom of the 8th, Martinez fouled off a pitch against A’s pitcher Kelly Downs, who then began shouting at Martinez because he swung “too hard.”

Martinez shouted back and both players were ejected with the count at 2-2.

A’s manager Tony La Russa brought third baseman Kevin Seitzer in to pitch, and called upon , who took the only pitch he saw for a strike, resulting in a strikeout.

Some odd rules apply to this situation, which officially result in Seitzer getting credit for a strikeout of Martinez, even though they never actually faced each other.

It’s also worth mentioning Naylor’s strikeout occurred before collecting his first career hit. While I can’t confirm this, it’s reasonable to guess he may be the first player in MLB history to strike out against a position player before recording a hit.
