A few strikeout records

Daniel Schneemann struck out 70 times in just 221 PA this season. It was the third most Ks franchise history by a player with fewer than 225 PA.

The list:

Thomas reached 65 in just 187 PA, tying Branyan’s 2002 season for the most strikeouts with fewer than 200 PA.

Gavin Williams Winless at Home

Gavin Williams went 0-7 in his seven starts at Progressive Field this season, becoming the fifth pitcher in franchise history to fail to record a win in at least seven home starts.

The others:

Cleveland won at least one home game started by each of the other pitchers, however. So Williams is the first player in franchise history to make at least seven starts at home and have the team go winless in every game – a streak which was unfortunately extended to eight games in the ALCS against the Yankees.

The previous record for most home starts without the team recording a win was six by in 1981, his final season with the Tribe.

Josh Bell’s Multi-HR Game

Josh Bell belted two home runs for the Diamondbacks against the Guardians on Wednesday. Dating back to 1990, its the 15th time a former member of the team had a multi-home run game against Cleveland.

Miller’s multi-homer performance is perhaps the most unique on the list as it occurred in the same season in which he played for Cleveland.

Spencer Howard’s Lone Start

Spencer Howard made one start (and one relief appearance) for Cleveland before getting designated for assignment. No one picked him up, so Howard elected free agency, likely ending his career with the Guardians.

That will make him the 69th player in franchise history to make exactly one start for the team.

The other most recent pitchers to make exactly one start for Cleveland:

Cantillo Gives Up HR to First Batter

Joey Cantillo surrendered a home run to the first batter he faced in his MLB debut on Sunday afternoon (Kyle Schwarber). It’s the sixth time in franchise history a pitcher gave up a home run to the first batter he faced.

Robertson’s home run off McCabe was previously the only time it happened to a starting pitcher.

Cantillo later gave up another home run to Schwarber in the third inning. He’s the second player in franchise history to give up two home runs to the same batter in his debut. He joins teammate , who gave up two homers to the Astros’ Trey Mancini in his debut in 2022.

Hawaiian-Born Players

On Sunday, became the third Hawaiian-born in franchise history and the first in over three decades.

The first was pitcher , who played for Cleveland from 1972-74. The second was outfielder , a Rule 5 selection from the Dodgers, who spent half of the 1991 season with Cleveland.

Shut Out By a Rookie

Phillies rookie Tyler Phillips tossed a shutout against the Guardians on Saturday night in just his fifth career outing. It was just the 17th time in franchise history Cleveland was shut out by a pitcher within his first five career games.

The most recent instances before Phillips:

  • 2013 – Andrew Albers, Twins
  • 2002 – Andy Van Hekken, Tigers
  • 1978 – Ross Baumgarten, White Sox
  • 1967 – Cisco Carlos, White Sox

Van Hekken’s performance was the most notable as it occurred in his MLB debut, and he would make just four more appearances in his career.

Brayan Rocchio’s Golden Sombrero

Brayan Rocchio went 0-4 with four strikeouts on Monday night against the Tigers, collecting his first career Golden Sombrero. It was Cleveland’s third Golden Sombrero of the year and the 210th in franchise history.

It was also the 98th time in franchise history a batter struck out in every plate appearance with at least four trips to the plate.
