On Wednesday against the Mets, Angel Genao became the first player in team history to collect four hits in his MLB debut. Only 22 players have done so since 1901.
Prior to Genao, nine players in team history had collected three hits in their regular season debut, most recently Chase DeLauter earlier this year.
DeLauter and Genao are just the 11th pair of teammates to collect at least three hits in their debut in the same season since 1901 — a feat which hadn’t been accomplished since… last week (Kevin McGonigle and Max Clark of the Tigers).
Genao is also the second player to collect four hits in his MLB debut in Cleveland, joining Wilson Ramos of the Twins in 2010. Ramos later played the final game of his career in Cleveland as a member of the Tribe in 2021.
Adding to the unusual feat was the fact that Genao was batting ninth in the order in his debut.
It’s just the 45th time Cleveland’s No. 9 hitter collected at least four hits in the game. Brayan Rocchio did it earlier this year in May.
It’s the first time two Cleveland hitters have collected four hits while batting ninth since Asdrubal Cabrera and Casey Blake in 2008.
