  • Originally drafted by Indians out of Southwestern College in 1st round of the January 1984 draft (different from the traditional June Draft, mostly JUCO players) but went back to school, this time at Arizona. Finally drafted by Cleveland again in 7th round of 1986 June draft.
  • Ranked by Baseball America as team’s 8th best prospect prior to 1987 season.
  • Recalled from AA Williamsport in July 1987 after starting second baseman Tony Bernazard was traded to Oakland.
  • Went 2-5 in MLB debut against White Sox, starting at second base and batting second in the order.
  • Hit a game-tying three-run triple against Detroit on September 1, 1987.
  • Remained the everyday second baseman through end of 1987 season, batting .265 with a .295 OBP and three home runs.
  • In 1988, 22-year-old Jay Bell won the starting shortstop job, pushing Julio Franco to second base, leaving Hinzo without a job. He spent the entire season at AAA Colorado Springs.
  • Recalled again in August 1989, but appeared in just three games before a hand injury sent him to the DL. Returned in September but closed out the 1989 season going 4-19.
  • Traded to Braves near the end of spring training in 1990.

Angel Martinez multi-hit games

Angel Martinez collected two hits today against the White Sox. He’s played in just three games and already has two career multi-hit games.

He’s just the 23rd player in team history with multiple multi-hit games within his first three games. Only Riggs Stevenson in 1921 accomplished the feat in all three games.
