Messick Through 8 Starts

In his first start of the year, tossed six scoreless against the Dodgers.

It was the fifth time in his eight career starts that Messick has gone at least six innings while allowing one or fewer runs, tying an MLB record.

He’s 16th player in MLB history to accomplish the feat, though it’s becoming more common for young pitchers to dominate (and get pulled after no more than six innings) that it’s slightly less historic than it sounds.

Here are the most recent pitchers prior to Messick:

  • 2025 – Noah Cameron, KC
  • 2024 – Paul Skenes, PIT
  • 2023 – Bryce Miller, SEA
  • 2017 – Jake Faria, TB
  • 2015 – Eduardo Rodriguez

The previous franchise record was four games by , Bearden and .

The six scoreless innings brought Messick’s career ERA to 2.36.

Among Cleveland pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched through eight career games, that’s the third lowest ERA over the last 100 seasons:

Parker Messick’s Historic Start

In his second career start, tossed seven scoreless innings against the Rays, lowering his ERA to 0.66.

He’s the seventh player in team history to throw at least 12 innings thru his first two outings with an ERA under 1.00.

Here’s the full list:

6 Pitchers in a Shutout

Six Guardians pitchers combined for a shutout of the Rockies on Wednesday: , , , , and .

It was the seventh time in franchise history at least six pitchers combined on a shutout and the fifth time in a nine-inning game.

Here’s the list of the others, which includes the MLB-record nine pitchers used in a 10-inning shutout against the Tigers in 2016 which was matched for the first time on Wednesday by the Royals.

Rookie Starters

Over the last 40 seasons, only two Cleveland rookies have started at least 15 games while posting an ERA under 3.50: Cody Anderson in 2015 and T.J. House in 2014.

It’s odd that such a list would feature such irrelevant players, as neither had much hype as prospects or did much beyond their rookie years.

Here’s a few others who accomplished the feat, dating back to 1955 (it was slightly more common before then):

1975 – Dennis Eckersley
1972 – Dick Tidrow
1964 – Luis Tiant
1958 – Gary Bell
1955 – Herb Score
