Messick Through 8 Starts

In his first start of the year, tossed six scoreless against the Dodgers.

It was the fifth time in his eight career starts that Messick has gone at least six innings while allowing one or fewer runs, tying an MLB record.

He’s 16th player in MLB history to accomplish the feat, though it’s becoming more common for young pitchers to dominate (and get pulled after no more than six innings) that it’s slightly less historic than it sounds.

Here are the most recent pitchers prior to Messick:

  • 2025 – Noah Cameron, KC
  • 2024 – Paul Skenes, PIT
  • 2023 – Bryce Miller, SEA
  • 2017 – Jake Faria, TB
  • 2015 – Eduardo Rodriguez

The previous franchise record was four games by , Bearden and .

The six scoreless innings brought Messick’s career ERA to 2.36.

Among Cleveland pitchers with at least 40 innings pitched through eight career games, that’s the third lowest ERA over the last 100 seasons:

Sub-2.00 ERA for Sabrowski

Although injuries delayed his season debut until late June, became the 42nd player in franchise history with at least 30 appearances to post an ERA under 2.00.

Sabrowski finished the year with a 1.84 ERA in 33 games.

He’s also the 10th rookie on the list.

Brothers in the Lineup

Bo Naylor and Josh Naylor were each in the Guardians lineup last night for the first time.

They’re the fourth pair of brothers to appear in the same game for Cleveland joining:

Pitchers Gaylord and Jim Perry were also on the Indians during the 1974 and 1975 seasons, but never appeared in the same game.

Dave and Vean Gregg were also briefly teammates in 1913, though Dave appeared in just one game.
