Tanner Bibee Gives up 5 HR

The Nationals helped tie a franchise record on Monday night, belting five home runs off Cleveland’s starter.

Bibee joins (2022 vs CHW), (1969 at BOS) and (1962 vs MIN) as the only players in franchise history to allow five home runs in a single game.

Bibee is the first player in franchise history to allow five home runs within the first three innings of the game.

It was also the second time Bibee has allowed four homers in a game.

Bibee is one of just 11 pitchers in franchise history with multiple 4-HR outings, joining:

Slade Cecconi’s Almost CG

The Guardians let attempt a complete game on Friday night against the Athletics, but it went sideways and he allowed three runs before getting pulled in the ninth.

As a result, Cecconi finished with a strange line of six runs allowed in 8.1 innings of work.

This was common through the first 50 or so years of baseball when a complete game was expected no matter what, but even by the 1960s pitchers were rarely sacrificed when it wasn’t going well.

Here are the most recent Cleveland starters to throw allow at least six earned runs in eight or more innings of work:

Worst SP ERA Thru 9 Games

Guardians starting pitchers have a 6.70 ERA through the team’s first nine games, the fifth worst in team history.

More HBP than K

Mariners rookie Emerson Hancock got the win last night against Cleveland despite hitting more batters (two) than strikeouts recorded (one).

He’s the first starter to defeat Cleveland with more HBP than strikeouts since Boston’s Clay Buchholz in 2012.
