Cleveland Baseball History

Andres Gimenez from 2-hole

There have been 144 players in franchise history with at least 200 PA from the two-hole in the lineup in a single season.

‘s .309 OBP this year ranked 120th.

It was still an improvement from (.306 last year and .308 the year before).

  • Worst OBP from two-hole (min 200 PA): .241, , 1991
  • Best OBP from two-hole (min 200 PA): .444, , 1996

20 HR, 20 SB at home

Jose Ramirez hit 20 HR and stole 21 bases in Progressive Field this year, just the ninth 20/20 home season in history. Back in 2008, had the sixth such season.

The others:

  • Shohei Ohtani, 2024 LAD
  • Ronald Acuna, 2023 ATL
  • Sizemore, 2008 CLE
  • Shawn Green, 1998 TOR
  • Barry Bonds, 1996 SFG
  • Mike Schmidt, 1975 PHI
  • , 1969 SFG
  • Willie Mays, 1956 NYG

30 HR Seasons and no one else over 15

Jose Ramirez and each topped 30 home runs in 2024, but and tied for third with only 14.

It’s just the second time in franchise history two players topped 30 homers but no one else had more than 15. In 1934, and topped 30 while finished third with only 14.

There have been two others times two players hit 30 homers while no one else hit 20:

Tyler Freeman’s double plays

Tyler Freeman grounded into 15 double plays in 2024. That’s not an unheard-of amount by any means, but what makes it unique is he had more double plays than doubles.

Freeman’s 14 doubles are the seventh most by a Cleveland hitter to finish with more GIDPs than doubles.

Here’s the leaderboard:

The most doubles by a Cleveland hitter to double his doubles with double plays is seven by in 1965 (7 doubles, 15 GIDP)

Tyler Freeman’s GIDP and HPBs

Tyler Freeman grounded into 15 double plays and was hit by 19 pitches in 2024, the first player in franchise history to reach at least 15 in each category.

The quirky stat line has been achieved only 55 times in MLB history, with the first to do so in 1955.

Despite the rarity of the stat line, there does appear to be a “skill” in it, as four players have done it at least three times: Minoso, Alex Rodriguez, Anthony Rizzo and Jose Abreu. Only Abreu has done it four times.

A few strikeout records

Daniel Schneemann struck out 70 times in just 221 PA this season. It was the third most Ks franchise history by a player with fewer than 225 PA.

The list:

Thomas reached 65 in just 187 PA, tying Branyan’s 2002 season for the most strikeouts with fewer than 200 PA.

Gavin Williams Winless at Home

Gavin Williams went 0-7 in his seven starts at Progressive Field this season, becoming the fifth pitcher in franchise history to fail to record a win in at least seven home starts.

The others:

Cleveland won at least one home game started by each of the other pitchers, however. So Williams is the first player in franchise history to make at least seven starts at home and have the team go winless in every game – a streak which was unfortunately extended to eight games in the ALCS against the Yankees.

The previous record for most home starts without the team recording a win was six by in 1981, his final season with the Tribe.
