Chase DeLauter’s Debut

Guardians prospect became the sixth player in MLB history to make his debut during the postseason in Game 2 of the AL Wild Card round and just the second to do so in the starting line.

Three of the others made their debut in 2020, including Alex Kirilloff of the Twins who made his debut as a starter, so those clearly deserve a significant asterisk.

So DeLauter is just the third to do so under normal circumstances, joining:

  • Adelberto Mondesi, 2015 Royals
  • Mark Kiger, 2006 A’s

Back to Back Gems

In a critical series against the Royals, and tossed 8 scoreless innings in consecutive games on Monday and Tuesday night.

Over the last 40 seasons, it’s just the fourth time starters have tossed at least 8 scoreless innings in consecutive games.

The others:

Lee and Carmona’s gems occurred during a double-header against the Blue Jays.

Parker Messick’s Historic Start

In his second career start, tossed seven scoreless innings against the Rays, lowering his ERA to 0.66.

He’s the seventh player in team history to throw at least 12 innings thru his first two outings with an ERA under 1.00.

2 HR Game by Former Prospect

Rays third baseman Junior Caminero hit two home runs against the Guardians on Monday night.

Caminero was originally signed by Cleveland in 2019 but was traded to the Rays for Tobias Myers in 2021 (who unfortunately was also put on waivers before having some success with the Brewers in recent years).

Caminero is the first player with a multi-homer game against Cleveland who was originally signed or drafted by Cleveland but never played for Cleveland since Marco Scutaro in 2009

Scutaro was originally signed by Cleveland out of Venezuela in 1994 and traded to Milwaukee as part of the deal in 2000.

As a member of the Blue Jays in 2009, Scutaro hit two homers, one of and another off .

Logan Allen Allows 9 Runs

On Saturday against the Rangers, allowed nine runs in five innings of work.

Despite getting shelled, he was pushed to remain in the game in an effort to preserve the bullpen.

Here are the most recent Cleveland pitchers to give up nine runs in a game prior to Allen:

Giving up nine runs while also pitching five innings is even more rare, however, in this era. Here’s the most recent to match Allen’s nine runs in five innings:

Jersey Number Droughts

In his major league debut, wore No. 77, becoming the second player in team history to don the jersey.

first wore it during his lone season in Cleveland in 1992.

The 33 year gap between the number making an appearance on the playing field is the fifth longest gap in team history and the longest by a jersey number that debuted post-1930.

Here’s the list

I’m not sure why they used a few high numbers in 1929 and 1930, but that was out of the norm for that era which led to the extreme gap.

There are three other numbers which have been out of circulation for at least 20 years which have the potential to join the list eventually

Career Cycyle

On Wednesday against Arizona, hit his first career triple, giving him a career cycle in his 16th game.

Here’s just the 9th player to collect the career cycle through 16 games or less with Cleveland since 1990, joining:

The fastest to do so in that span was Ward, who needed just eight games in 1990.

The all-time franchise record is five games, shared by (1989) and (1943)
